Pathophysiology of Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia
Kim Jae-Min

Abstract
Muscle pain is common manifestation of chronic pain conditions in all age groups. The most frequently described muscle pain syndromes are myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia. There are no pathologic or laboratory diagnostic tools for indentifying myofascial pain syndrome. Therefore, the possible causes of myofascial pain syndrome are peripheral nociception and central sensitization. The pathophysiology of fibromyalgia remains unproven, but the genetic factor, stress, stress-response systems, autonomic nervous system and neuroendocrine system may contribute to the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia. This article summaries the pathophysiology of myofascial pain syndrome and fibromyalgia.
